California Bans Private, For-Profit Prisons

On October 11, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a bill that “…bans the use of for-profit, private detention facilities, including those under contract to the federal government to hold immigrants awaiting deportation hearings….” This ban on the operation of for-profit prisons in California is welcome news. It’s a move that will doubtless be fought hard against by the industry. We’re sure there will be more to come with this story.
