A 2017 survey of prisoners found that roughly 89% suffered trauma as children or young adults; 24% were symptomatic for PTSD. This trauma is a significant contributor to the types of behavior that lead to incarceration. Unaddressed, this trauma is a significant contributor to re-arrest after a prisoner is released, 76% within the first five years.
You can help break this cycle. Your support of Prison Yoga Project will help us reach more prisoners with yoga and mindfulness practices that help them recognize triggered reactions, and give them the tools to pause, reflect, and respond appropriately.
“I grew up in a dysfunctional environment…so I had a lot of trauma suppressed within me. Yoga taught me to be aware of that trauma when it comes up through triggers…. Yoga taught me how to just breath and, you know, relax and perceive the truth of what’s going on….”
