Board of Advisors

We have tapped six highly accomplished volunteer Advisors to help us leap ahead of demand. We sought out motivated people who were moved by the mission, willing to accept the challenge to accelerate change through their own creativity and effort. We are so pleased that these warriors are becoming part of the story.

    • Charles Higgins

    • Charles Higgins is a San Francisco native and social entrepreneur with more than fifteen years experience in the development and strategic management of nonprofit organizations. Most recently, he served as Chief Executive Officer for the San Francisco Maritime National Park Association. During the previous ten years, he was Executive Director of the Richmond District Neighborhood Center, running after-school and community-serving programs in 8 schools as well as a food bank on the west side of San Francisco. He also served for five years as the Executive Director of Slide Ranch, an environmental education center with a focus on sustainable agriculture and food. Charles has a proven track record for initiating innovative projects that inspire growth and increase mission orientation.

    • Tim Dale

    • Tim Dale, the founder of Yoga Tree, grew his original 1999 yoga studio into ten Bay Area locations developing a reputation for the quality of its teachers and its renowned Teacher Training Program. The popularity of Yoga Tree’s over 300 weekly classes and many workshops was built upon the depth and variety of the yoga styles of the many nationally respected yoga teachers who taught them. In June 2015, Yoga Tree was acquired by Yoga Works, a yoga industry leader operating 38 studios across the U.S. Tim also has an extensive history of developing and operating numerous successful Bay Area restaurants and nightclubs.

    • Anne Sands

    • Anne Sands is a third generation Californian and graduate of UC Davis with degrees in biological sciences and secondary education. For 25 years she ran an environmental consulting firm specializing in watershed planning, freshwater ecology, public involvement and interagency coordination for EIR’s and EIS’s on most of the major rivers in the state. She served as president of the State Reclamation Board, the Marin County Planning Commission and the Bolinas Fire Protection District. She chaired the $6 million campaign to build the Bolinas Firehouse and Clinic project. Currently Anne is the West Marin Disaster Council Coordinator. She is a member of the West Marin Rotary club, where her interests focus on funding programs for youth, underserved populations and international peace. In her free time, Anne rides her endurance horses and manages her 10 acre ranch in Dogtown.

    • Franklin Parlamis

    • Franklin Parlamis is a partner in Pine River Capital Management, a global alternative asset management firm committed to charitable initiatives through its Pine River Foundation. Franklin manages Pine River’s San Francisco office and is Portfolio Manager for the Pine River Convertibles Fund. Previously, Franklin was a managing director at hedge fund Amaranth Advisors and an associate at law firm Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton. He has degrees from Yale Law School, the Yale School of Graduate Studies and Princeton University. Franklin lives in Mill Valley, California with his wife Jennifer and three children Isabella, Mack and Nicholas.

    • Janice Gates

    • Janice Gates is a yoga teacher, author and mother with deep roots in the yoga tradition, Buddhism, and Somatic Psychology. She is a pioneer in the field of Yoga Therapy and has served as President of the International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT). Janice is the author of Yogini, the Power of Women in Yoga, has led yoga and mindfulness retreats internationally for over 20 years, owned and operated Yoga Garden Studio in San Anselmo, California, and is on the teaching faculty at Spirit Rock Meditation Center.

    • Sachi Doctor

    • Sachi Doctor is an Ayurvedic health practitioner, yoga teacher, and communication facilitator. She is the founder of Elemental Alchemy, which offers holistic care and self-healing techniques for those navigating their way towards optimal mind-body health. In addition to her involvement with the Prison Yoga Project, Sachi serves as an ambassador for Yoga Gives Back, a non-profit that raises funds within the US yoga community to support microcredit programs for women in India. She holds a Msc from the London School of Economics.
